*FORGOTTEN HYMNAL*
AN ALMOST
FORGOTTEN HYMNAL PRAYER
The 3 x 9 bead "Angelic Trisagion" chaplet is believed to be an ancienthymn, prayed to unite one with the 9 choirs of angels in praise to the Holy Trinity. Over the centuries, the prayers have changed some - as has the music - from the traditional form prayed by the Trinitarians. But you will recognize parts that are found in other devotions such as the Divine Mercy. The prayers may be prayed on the chaplet above or (see below) may also be adapted to a standard 5 decade rosary.

15c OLD TESTAMENT TRINITY ICON
Andrey Rublev, (Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow)

TRISAGION : 'THRICE HOLY'
The Greek phrase 'Trisagion' translates as "Thrice Holy" - as in this hymn God is described Holy in three different qualities; 'Holy God' (Agios o Theos). 'Holy strong One' (?gios ?schyros), 'Holy Immortal One' have mercy on us (?gios ath?natos, el?ison imas). In Latin: 'Sanctus Deus, Sanctus Fortis, Sanctus immort?lis, miser?re nobis.'

REVELATION 4:8

8 The four living creatures, each of them with six wings, were covered with eyes inside and out.  Day and night they do not stop exclaiming:
“HOLY, HOLY HOLY IS THE LORD GOD ALMIGHTY, WHO WAS, AND WHO IS AND WHO IS TO COME.”

 TRISAGION - APOSTOLIC ORIGIN?
(an exceptional prayer sequence for today)
This hymn is ancient, and believed by some to date back to the time of Christ's Crucifixion - of Apostolic origin. It is time for us to reconsider it for today.

THE ANGELS SING
One tradition tells of a violent earthquake in Constantinople (5c). During prayer for heavenly assistance, the Emperor and Patriarch saw a child lifted into midair.  All cried out Kyrie eleison (Lord have mercy) As the child descended to earth he cried out he had heard the angels sing: 'Holy God, Holy and Strong, Holy and Immortal'. After giving this exhortation and telling the people to pray the same words, the child died and the earthquake ceased.

DATING FROM BEFORE 451
This hymn was one of the exclamations at the Council of Chalcedon (451).  It is recorded as a common prayer, not only in the Greek Oriental Liturgies but also used in the Gallican Liturgy (see Saint Germain of Paris, D 576) where it suggests it was a traditional / common prayer form with its roots in ancient Liturgies dating back to the time of the apostles.

WHEN CHRIST DIED
The Coptic Orthodox Church believes it originated with Nicodemus, while on taking down the body of Christ with Joseph of Arimathea, Jesus opened his eyes. He shouted "Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal". Traditionally, it is also considered proof that his Divinity did not part from his humanity.

 V. Let us bless the Father, and the Son with the Holy Spirit.
 R. Be praised and exalted above all things forever.Let us pray,

Almighty, ever-living God, who has permitted us Thy servants, in our profession of  the true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity, and in the power of that  majesty to adore the Unity, grant, that by steadfastness in this same faith, we may be  ever guarded against all adversity: through Christ our Lord.
 All: Amen

All: Set us free, save us, vivify us, O Blessed Trinity!

COUNTING DEVICES
The Angelic Trisageon is the official prayer of the Trinitarians (Order of the Blessed Trinity -12c) and has been recited by them for centuries. It is not known when the prayers were actually set into a counting device such as a prayer rope, beads or a peg board. Remembering a counting device would free the mind for deeper meditation.
+
(The prayers above may easily be adapted to a 5 decade rosary.)

  REVELATION 4:8-11
8 The four living creatures, each of them with six wings,* were covered with eyes inside and out. Day and night they do not stop exclaiming:
+
   HOLY, HOLY HOLY
IS THE LORD GOD ALMIGHTY,
WHO WAS, AND WHO IS
AND WHO IS TO COME.”
+
9 Whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to the one who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever,  10  the twenty-four elders fall down before the one who sits on the throne and worship him, who lives forever and ever. They throw down their crowns before the throne, exclaiming:

11  “Worthy are you, Lord our God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all things; because of your will
they came to be and were created.”
