FRENCH JET
THE 'MOURNING BEAD'
This tri shaped jet bead is glass. It was called 'French Jet' or when faceted,'Cut Jet'. It was a spin off of 'true jet' (See below). These are a very, very old hand pressed bead easily dating back to the 1860’s. When Queen Victoria lost  her beloved Prince Albert in 1861 French Jet was used in jewelry as a fashion statement and became the rage in all of Europe and spread to America during the time of the Civil War and through the turn of the century.

18 May the eyes of (your) hearts be enlightened, that you may know what is the hope that belongs to his call, what are the riches of glory in his inheritance among the holy ones, 19 and what is the surpassing greatness of his power for us who believe, in accord with the exercise of his great might.

INSPIRED BY VICTORIAN PERIOD
The history of jet glass beads actually dates back to 13th century Bohemia and Czechoslovakia where the glass bead industry was serving the primary needs of the church.  Its hard to know when the term 'Mourning Bead Rosary' was born. Did it find its use early on, and adapted during the Victorian reign for mourning purposes?  It was customary to bury rosaries with the dead so they are few and far between. We know that rosaries made of carved bog oak wood (Ireland) are also very hard to find for this reason.  Mourning Rosaries were also made of a sulpherized rubber called Vulcanite (Gutta-percha) - a type of latex.

.. a family heirloom ...
When I was looking for my first rosary, your rosaries took the top spot on the list.  Anytime someone sees my rosary, they always ask where I got it.  You have some of the most beautiful rosaries on the web and my own black glass rosary (LEA.2031) is destined to be a family heirloom at this point. Thanks, Dennis

... have been Civil War buffs for years ...
Eyes of your Heart. It is so simple yet so elegant and I really could believe that it dates back to the Civil War! I was first intrigued by this rosary by that simple fact. My husband and I have been Civil War buffs for years...he for the battles, me for the times and lifestyles. So to own a rosary made of beads dating back to that period was so beguiling! But as always the rosary does Our Mother's magic and I forget all about anything except the love of Her and Our Lord when I close my eyes to pray! Thank you again for the wonderful work you do and for making shopping your site such a pleasurable and blessed experience!  Andrea Z (USA)

~ ABOUT TRUE JET ~
GLASS JET
When jet was chosen by Queen Victoria as the official mourning jewelry for the royal court in 1861, she had no idea how this would move into the world of fashion. It also became very popular in America because of the loss of life during the Civil War and would heavily effect the color of beads used in rosaries during this century. It is known as 'French Jet'

ABOUT TRUE JET
True Jet, a bituminous (coal) shale, originally mined in Whidby, has been used in ornamental work since 658 AD. At this time, a monastery was in Whidby. The first Abbess, St Hilda, was called upon to pray for the removal of a terrible plague of adders. As the legend goes, she prayed off their heads and their bodies turned to stone!  Eventually the monastery was destroyed by the pagan Danes. During the 12th century, the monastery was rebuilt and the monks carved crosses and beads from the True Jet which were used in Paternosters or Rosaries. These, along with small amounts of jewelry were sold to the pilgrims who came to the abbey.
+
Santiago de Campostela, a town in Spain was another pilgrimage site where True Jet was carved into holy medals which were given or sold to pilgrims to certify their journey. This practice dated from the 10th century on.

In the ‘Glossary of Mineralogy’ (1861) Henry Bristow states , ‘In the last century, 1200 men were employed in Aude alone, in carving and turning the jet of that area into beads, rosaries and [jewelry].
