 *WHAT is a NOVENA ?*
where does it come from?  what was the first novena?

EL GREC0 (1604 - 1614) MUSEO del PRADO

*NOVENA - 9 DAYS*
A NINE DAY DEVOTION
A Novena  (novem, nine) is nine days of private or public devotion to obtain special graces.  According to New Advent, 'The number nine in Holy Writ is indicative of suffering and grief'.  But it is also faithfully used by people who are searching for answers, healing and personal needs. From Scripture we see its origin, givven by Christ himself during his 40 days, asking for prayer from his apostles, all:

ACTS 1 1-9
 THE PROMISE OF THE SPIRIT
1  In the first book,  Theophilus, I dealt with all that Jesus did and taught  2  until the day he was taken up, after giving instructions through the holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen.
+
3  He presented himself alive to them by many proofs after he had suffered, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.  4 While meeting with them, he enjoined them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for “the promise of the Father  about which you have heard me speak;  5  for John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the holy Spirit.”
 +
THE ASCENSION OF JESUS
6  When they had gathered together they asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7   He answered them, “It is not for you to know the times or seasons that the Father has established by his own authority.
 +
8  But you will receive power when the holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”  9  When he had said this, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight.

 ASCENSION - PENTECOST
The first novena was in honor of the Holy Spirit, making it the oldest of all novenas.  The Lord himself directed the apostles to return to Jerusalem an wait for the Holy Spirit. This was on his Ascension into Heaven, (Holy Thursday) After 9 days of intense prayer, the Holy Spirit descended on those in the upper room as tongues of fire and all were given the gifts of the Spirit.
+
The novena in honor of the Holy Spirit is the oldest of all novenas since it was first made at the direction of Our Lord Himself.  It is still the only novena officially prescribed by the Church. Addressed to the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity, it is a powerful plea for the light and strength and love so sorely needed by every Christian. Since then, many saints have been ask to interecede for our needs.

PENTECOST - A JEWISH FEAST DAY
This day of Pentecost, the second most important feast in Jewish tradition - also called The Feast of Harvest of the Firstfruits" (Exodus 23:16), "The Feast of Weeks" (Exodus 24:22; Deuteronomy 16:10: II  Paralipomenon 8:13), the "Day of Firstfruits" (Numbers 28:26),  became the birthday of the New Christian Church.

ACTS 2:1-4
1  When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. 2  And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. 3 Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, 3 which parted and came to rest on each one of them.  4  And they were all filled with the holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim

THREE THOUSAND BELIEVED
The apostles received the Holy Spirit and were miraculously enabled to go out into Jerusalem prophesying and speaking in languages that all the visitors to Jerusalem could understand as told further in Acts 2:5-6: "Many religious Jews from every country in the world were living in Jerusalem ... they were hearing everything in their own languages." The noise and activity attracted a huge crowd and the Apostle Peter preached a sermon to the crowd with some effectiveness, as Acts 2:41 reports: "On that day about three thousand believed his message and were baptized."

 *PRAYER to the HOLY SPIRIT*
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your Faithful. Enkindle in us the fire of Your Love.  Send forth Your Spirit, and we shall be created.  And You will renew the Face of the Earth.
  +
  Let us pray:
O God Who instructs the hearts of the Faithful by the Light of the Holy Spirit, grant us in that same Spirit to be truly wise and ever to rejoice in His consolation -- through Christ, Our Lord. Amen.
