The first sign or constellation in the story of the coming Jewish Messiah according to the ancient Hebrew Calendar is Virgo (Virgin). It lies between LIBRA (Scales of Justice) and LEO (Christ the King). It is one of the largest constellations in the sky. Ancients saw it as the Virgin (seed of the woman, virgin birth) holding an ear of corn in her left hand (promised seed), a baby across her waist (the coming Messiah) and a branch in the right hand (shoot). It is believed that the stars on Our Lady of Guadalupe's garment aligned with the stars in the sky at the moment of her appearance on the tilma of Juan Diego in 1531. This star imagery takes up one half the sky along the horizon and may be seen by finding ORION (which is at her feet, and is the birthplace of stars! Follow along past LEO (Christ the King who rests on her stomach) and past VIRGO virgin) to the constellation CORONA (crown) that sat on her head at that time. It is comforting to sense that she is always looking over us in her starry robe that told the Aztecs that she is the Queen of Heaven. Note too, that the constellation HYDRA (Serpent) lies almost the full length of her to our right. Mary often speaks about how close he is, always nearby. |
