BEADS FOR FUR PELTS
RTB - TRADE BEADS
Currency for fur trade as early priests came with fur traders to evangelize the indigenous as early as the 1500s - Enjoy learning more about this interesting missionary activity in the in the new land. The beads in our rosaries above are from an old collection of 'trade beads'
+
WHAT ARE TRADE BEADS?
Just as they suggest. To trade goods, a money of sorts.. In North America, beads were shipped from Europe to trade mainly for beaver pelts, used in the making of mens hats.  The priests who came to teach the indigenous about the true God, found that bringing beads to trade, attracted them as well. Many used these beads to string into rosaries.

ABOUT THESE 'RUSSIAN BLUE' TRADE BEADS
(Bohemia - CZ) A bit confusing at best! 'Russian Blues' were popular with the Russian fur traders in the Pacific Northwest fur trade (Bering 1741 discovery  and continued through the early 19c until the seal and otter population were depleted. The beads were also popular to the Eastern Fur Traders and excavation sites in So Illinois have yielded Russian Blues. (1700s - 1800s)

*FATHER PAUL VACHON*
RTB.21130 -  A RELATIVE COMES HOME
+
WE HAVE NO IMAGES OF FATHER VACHON
INSPIRED BY ALL THE UNSUNG PRIESTS
+
ABOUT PERE PAUL VACHON - (1656 - 1729)
Pere Vachon, a Diocesan Priest was one of the first priests born in New France (Canadian soil) shortly after the'North American Martyrs' (1642 - 1649) period.  He pursued his studies at the seminary of Quebec and at 12 was among the top eight students to enter.  He was raised to the dignity of a priest by Mgr de Laval on 21 December 1680. and served the South Coast as far as Cap-Saint-Ignace in 1683, just missing the time of Pere Marquette. He served as Canon of the Quebec chapter in 1684 and in 1692 served as Cure of Cap-de-la-Madeleine. He directed the construction of the Three Rivers Parish, center of pilgrimages in 1717 where he would be buried. When his body was exhumed (1895) they discovered he was perfectly conserved (preserved).

RELATIVES IN OUR OWN BACK YARD
In doing research for this series of rosaries inspired to our early priests who came from Europe to evangelize the indians of Canada and what would be North America something happened! One of our guild members, Carol, discovered a relative! This totally confirmed our desire to bring the past into our world today, how close we are to these brave souls from the 16c on.
+
Even though Pere Vachon is a distant relative of Carols, who is one of our guild members, we believe Pere Vachon represents many of the unsung priests who were either trained by the Jesuits or were Jesuits serving the early history of the Canadian and North American fur traders. This rosary like the others in this series was inspired by these priests who tirelessly worked for the love of the Lord, Jesus Christ.
+
We all have relatives in the back yard of our past that are closer than we realize! She had recently traveled to Canada to visit her heritage and where her mothers family had come from only to discover she had visited the church where Fr Paul Vashon was buried, not knowing they were related!
+
INTERCESSORY PRAYER
We encourage you to prayer for Father Version.  Ask Peer Vachon to intercede for you in your hour of need. Ask especially for those who are searching for direction in a career or how to serve the Lord as he wills it.

'SPANISH GRIPPE'
When she was 4, an (measles / smallpox) epidemic struck her, killing her family. She was left weakened, scarred and with poor eyesight for the rest of her short life.  She died when she was 24.  Several witnesses including two Jesuit priests saw the scars leave her face shortly after her death.  Many suffered from these outbreaks believed brought by the white man from Spain and France who passed it to the vulnerable indians who in turn infected groups of white men in other areas.
