SAINT JUNEPERO SERRA
CALIFORNIA MISSIONS
Fr Serra, often called the 'Founder of California' began a chain of Missions that go from San Diego to Sonoma. These missions, many destroyed by earthquakes, still show the simple care given by those who loved them.  Old cactus plants, flowering bushes and trees still exist in their rock framed gardens on the grounds of the missions.  This rosary gives honor to Serra and the beautiful Christians who followed behind and took care of the Missions in a sometimes barren coastal land. One of our most popular rosaries ever. This is the Fifth edition.

 GENESIS 28:11-15
111 When he came upon a certain shrine, as the sun had already set, he stopped there for the night. Taking one of the stones at the shrine, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep at that spot. 12 Then he had a dream: a stairway rested on the ground, with its top reaching to the heavens; and God’s messengers were going up and down on it. 13 And there was the LORD standing beside him and saying: “I, the LORD, am the God of your forefather Abraham and the God of Isaac; the land on which you are lying I will give to you and your descendants. ...

14 These shall be as plentiful as the dust of the earth, and through them you shall spread out east and west, north and south. In you and your descendants all the nations of the earth shall find blessing. 15 Know that I am with you; I will protect you wherever you go, and bring you back to this land. I will never leave you until I have done what I promised you.”

~ THE OLD MISSIONS ~
  WE WERE BLESSED
LIVING NEAR THE OLD MISSIONS
+
As a child raised in Texas, I had visited some of the old California Missions with my parents. I remember how the Carmel Mission stayed with me. I didn't know why. I searched my mind so hard for this spiritual place.  Where was it?
+
SAN DIEGO TO MONTEREY
Now, many years later, when our children were small we lived next to and went to Mass at the old Mission in San Diego ('San Diego de Alcalá') the first mission built by Father Junipero Serra (July 16, 1769 ). From there we moved north to Monterey where 3 of our children attended the old Mission school. ('San Carlos Borromeo', or the 'Royal Presidio Chapel', (1770).
+
And a few miles away, there it was. The Mission at Carmel. (Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo) Both still active but moved south away from military influence. It hit me hard to walk the grounds again, now a Catholic - to bring back those deeply spiritual memories.
+
MOVED TO SAN FRANCISCO
Later, would love walking to Mission Dolores ('San Francisco de Asís') on Mission Street in San Francisco for Mass, near my daughters home in the city. So loved the being near and attending Mass at the old, adobe Mission Churches over the years. Am sure they still smell the same earthy smell as when the Franciscans and area indians built them.  After all those years, they have become even more dear to us.
+
 MISSION VIEJO
When we moved back to SoCal again we lived near another old mission in Capistrano ('San Juan Capistrano') near Laguna Beach, also founded by Fr Junipero Serra. (November  01, 1776).

If you have never been, be sure to start in San Diego and work your way up the coast to Sonoma. And don't miss the beautiful Mission Santa Barbara, the The Queen of them all! (and while in Sonoma, check out the wines.)
+
IF YOU LOVE THE NATURAL, YOU WILL LOVE THE LOOK OF OF THIS ROSARY.
JUST ENOUGH COLOR TO GIVE IT A VOICE OF PRAISE!

... prayer leads to longer life ...
Someone recently asked if it was true that prayer extends ones life and that if you prayed the rosary it would prolong your life.  Rob, a fellow rosary maker  responded with a classic:
+
'Not only does prayer lead to longer life but I've actually heard
that it might even lead to ..... eternal life!'
+
(I couldn't resist, sorry....something somewhat amusing about all these scientists scurrying about trying to prove the power of prayer....I mean, all they have to do is talk to us, right?) Signed, 'The Rosary Man' - Rob Hopcke, RM  (CA)

... an ancient looking rosary ...
The rosaries just arrived yesterday afternoon and they are really something. The Mission rosary, I think, really captures the essence of the Guadalupe experience--the colors, the textures, and the Oaxacan fittings all combine to create an ancient-looking rosary. It is earthy and simple, rather than opulent--symbolic of Juan Diego, his heritage, and the environment in which this apparition occurred. Very nicely done. J Bleck (IN)
