What is Staurolite? This deeply toned slice of stone called Staurolite (brown silicate mineral) is 'famous for its twinned crystals that form into the shape of a cross. Its name comes from the greek for cross: "stauros lithos" (Greek) cross stone . For centuries it has been associated with Christianity as a symbol for the cross. It is brown, black and reddish brown. Usually you see staurolite as an actual cross and this is its more traditional form. This chaplet gives visual essence of the incense of old, reminding us how it carries prayer heavenward. Very popular, totally sold out of first edition. Limited. + Ave beads are antique terra cotta cubes, a type of clay with matte glaze. |

There is no known history on this crucifix. The current owner said it was in a box of personal belongings of a person who died and the relatives had little to say about it, considering it a piece of junk. From similar items we have seen, we are fairly certain it is European, probably Spain. It may have been in route to New Spain (Latin America). It was customary for Franciscan and Dominican Friars to travel with the explorers (15 -16 c), bringing religious items to give to the indigenous people. Items such as rosaries, religious statues and crucifixes which were great visual aides in the process of bringing them to the new Christian God. Sometimes ships were lost along with their crew and
cargo. Because of the wear on this crucifix, this may have been churning
in sand and water for centuries. It is hard to know. Since these
items were mass produced and not by artisans of the period, they are not
necessarily perfect in proportion which gives them a beauty all their own
like a type of folk art.

Another angel, who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. A large quantity of incense was given to him to offer with the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar that stood in front of the throne; [4] and so from the angel's hand the smoke of the incense went up in the presence of God and with it the prayers of the saints. Revelation 8:3-4 |
