Wearing sacramentals brings glory to the Lord.  In turn we are blessed.  These are the signs of our birth - not a token of 'good luck'.  A priestly blessing gives back to the Lord what is his, opening the door for him to work. Think of water, blessed it becomes - Holy Water.  Think of when babies are baptized - they are given back to the Lord. ~ ABOUT WEARING ROSARIES ~

  FROM A PRIEST

 ~ OUR MILITARY ~
 One of the Army Reserve units [in our area] was being deployed to Iraq.  The unit had a large group of Roman Catholics that wanted blessed nylon cord rosaries to wear around the necks under their undershirts.  I blessed both the soldier and the rosary and prayed for the unit to be under the protection of the Blessed Mother, Jesus and the holy angels.  Rosaries are FORBIDDEN in the Arab countries but the cord rosaries are not easily detected and can be removed with the tee shirt and no one would notice.

There is nothing wrong with these soldiers wearing a blessed rosary because they are doing so with faith.

~ BUT WHAT ABOUT GANG MEMBERS? ~
Here in the city gang members also wear rosaries like a magic talisman or good luck charm.  The gang members often do not even know the rosary prayers. When I see [them] wearing rosaries I pray silently they will be converted.  If they speak to me I ask if they have prayed that rosary. I give them a leaflet on how to pray the rosary.  (Rosary makers should offer these leaflets with rosaries they make.)  Often they tell me the rosary was a gift from their grandma!  And I know then someone is praying for them for sure.  Here the rosary often points to a lost soul that needs God and our prayers.

AND HOLLYWOOD?
A few years back Hollywood entertainers started wearing expensive rosaries as status symbols, just like the cross was worn in previous years.  The wearer did not have a clue what being a Catholic Christian means.  Here again I prayed for the persons conversion.

Is wearing a rosary wrong in the last two instances?  It is not the best use of a rosary but our Lady and our Lord can still use it to bring glory to God.  And I do pray this will happen to the one who is wearing that rosary. Peace, Fr. Joe

NOTE
Rosaries come in various lengths. The 15 decade is traditionally worn at the waist, 5 decade (neck), the one decade chaplet bracelet (wrist) and the smallest ring (finger). It was customary to wear the rosary during various eras of history by the devoted. When it became a fashion statement by the rich, it would be banned by various religious groups because of the wearers lack of understanding of what a rosary was for. It is a sacramental of the church, meant for counting prayers and when worn as adornement, Father says it so well, we should pray for the coversion of that persons heart. The rosary is very powerful. + RW
