THE ISLAND OF MURANO

According to Wikipedi"the term millefiori is a combination of the Italian words "mille" (thousand) and "fiori" (flowers). Apsley Pellatt (in his book "Curiosities of Glass Making") was the first to use the term "millefiori", which appeared in the Oxford Dictionary in 1849. The beads were called mosaic beads before then. While the use of this technique long precedes the term millefiori, it is now frequently associated with Venetian glassware. +
ANCIENT ROMAN CANES The manufacture of mosaic beads can be traced to Ancient Roman, Phoenician and Alexandrian times. Canes, probably made in Italy, have been found as far away as 8th century archaeological sites in Ireland, and millefiori was used in thin slices to brilliant effect in the early 7th century Anglo-Saxon jewelery. Today, we see this technique used in 'New Clay' (see the work of Karen Lewis, California artist work.) + ANTIQUE PATERS PATERS ON THIS THIRD DEDICATION ARE OF HAND PRESSED GLASS BEADS FROM GERMANY. + ROSARY III - SHOPPING CART (use back button to return) |

"24 Your decrees are my delight; they are my counselors. 25 I lie prostrate in the dust; give me life in accord with your word. 26 I disclosed my ways and you answered me; teach me your laws. 27 Make me understand the way of your precepts; I will ponder your wondrous deeds. |
