BEAUTIFUL WORKS OF ART FOR YOUR HEART and SOUL
Rare and beautiful
religious statues from the Sisters of Bethlehem of Mougeres France.
Each one is a treasured lifetime gift for the one who receives it. Each
one is hand painted and hand finished by the sisters in France. Each one
symbolizes the simple life of their spiritul life with rough textured clothing
yet faces so soft! Visual reminders of favorite saints!
The Monastère de Bethléem
The Community of Bethlehem had its humble beginnings
in a French stable over 50 years ago. Because of this, the sisters named
their new monastery 'Bethlehem' They chose St. Bruno of Cologne as
their spiritual Father and took on the Gospel of silence and solitude as
their spiritual focus.
Each of these beautiful statues is handmade by the
sisters in the monastery of Mougeres France. They use a local dolomite
stone from the Pyrenees in the south of France. It is crushed then
resin is added so the stone may be cast. The wonderful thing about this
stone, once reconstituted is that it takes on a rare patina when painted
or may be left in its more natural ivoried matte state. Along with these
wonderful statues, they also are known for their beautiful crèches
and jewelry.
WHY
STATUES?

SAINT BERNADETTE by the Sisters of Bethlehem 4 inches: St Bernadette of Lourdes sits with two lambs as she prays her daily rosary. Bernadette and her little sister and a friend were sent to collect firewood when a very beautiful Lady appeared to her above a rose bush in a grotto called Massabielle. She was dressed in blue and white and smiled at Bernadette, then made the sign of the cross. She held a rosary of ivory and gold. Bernadette fell on her knees, took out her own rosary
and began to pray the rosary. (Thursday, February 11, 1858)

VISUAL AIDS
I believe one of the most beautiful explanation,
was while touring the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome, the church
of the Holy Father. Huge statues line either side of the main part of the
basilica leading up to the altar. The tour guide asked us to remember,
the people of this period had no books, no media to teach them about famous
people in the church so these statues are reminders, teachers if you will,
visual aids - not unlike the statues we see in our own National Capitol
in Washington DC. No, statues are not there to be worshipped, only to remind
us of ways we can, not imitate their gifts and virtues but to lead lives
of virtue by developing our own gifts given by God himself.
