THIS EARLY CHRISTIAN RITE
The Basilica of Saint Clement (Italian: Basilica di San Clemente al Laterano) is a Roman Catholic minor basilica dedicated to Pope Clement I located in Rome, Italy. Archaeologically speaking, the stucture is a three-tiered complex of buildings: (1) the present basilica built just before the year 1100 during the height of the Middle Ages;  Beneath the present basilica is a 4th century basilica that had been converted out of the home of a Roman nobleman, part of which had in the 1st century briefly served as an early church, and the basement of which had in the 2nd century briefly served as a mithraeum [cult worship - A perfect example of evil built over good, and good over evil] the home of the Roman nobleman bad been built on the foundations of a republican era building that had been destroyed in the Great Fire of 64. (see Wikipedia)

'TITULUS CLEMENTIS'
It was customary for a place or room to be set aside in private homes for the celebration of the Liturgy of the Eucharist as there were no churches.  This was the case here and tradition has it that Peter and Paul each celebrated this early Christian rite in a room set aside in Clement's home.   By the 2nd century, it was recorded as 'titulus Clementis', a place of worship in Rome.

After Constantine's conversion around 313, this church was dedicated to the third successor of Peter, Pope Clement (88-97).   St. Francis and his brothers visited this very important basilica while in Rome to see the Holy Father.

'DOMUS ECCLESIA'
A titulus (pl. tituli), or house churches were the first churches in Rome, in the homes of Christians. St Paul the Apostle mentioned such a church in Romans 16, 3-5 where he greeted Prisca and Aquila and «the church which is in their house». St Paul himself had such a church in his home according to Acts 28, 30. The practise continued for some time, and St Justin (100-165) mentioned that Christians met in their homes to celebrate the mysteries.  Such as a church was known as a domus ecclesia, or house church. The name of the owner was usually inscribed in a slab by the door, and such as slab was called a titulus. Therefore, it became common to refer to a church as a titulus and to distinguish between the different churches by referring to the owner's name. (see Wikia)
