St John Lateran is the oldest Christian church in existence. It is called the 'Mother of all the Churches' and is the cathedral of Rome. It was built on the site of the family estate of Laterni. It reflects many styles of architecture and remains one of the most beautiful of the basilicas in the world. In a separate building you will find the Scala Santa - traditionally known as the 'holy stairs' brought from the palace of Pontius Pilate, the stairs Christ climbed during the Passion.
