VENERABLE
RSTS:  SAINTHOOD SERIES
...  as a Christian, I do not believe in death but in the resurrection. If they kill me, I shall rise again in the Salvadoran people."

WHO WAS OSCAR ROMERO?
Óscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez (15 August 1917 – 24 March 1980), bishop of the Catholic Church (El Salvador). He spoke out against poverty, social injustice, assassinations and torture.  Romero was assassinated while offering Mass in 1980.  Archbishop Romero is one of the ten 20th-century martyrs depicted in statues above the Great West Door of Westminster Abbey in London, a testament to the widespread respect of Christians throughout the world.  In 2008, Europe-based magazine A Different View included Romero among its 15 Champions of World Democracy.

ASSASSINATED
WHILE CELEBRATING MASS
Archbishop Romero was shot while celebrating Mass at a small chapel located in a hospital called "La Divina Providencia", on 24 March 1980. His homily was directed to the Salvadoran soldiers, "as Christians, to obey God's higher order and to stop carrying out the government's repression and violations of basic human rights."  He was shot while elevating the Chalice during the Eucharistic rite.  His blood spilled over the altar mixing with the Holy Blood of Christ on the altar.

AS A CHRISTIAN
I DO NOT BELIEVE IN DEATH
“I have frequently been threatened with death. I must say that, as a Christian, I do not believe in death but in the resurrection. If they kill me, I shall rise again in the Salvadoran people."

THE FUNERAL
Over 25000 mourners attended from all over the world. It was the largest demonstration in Salvadoran history, possibly all of Latin America. It proved to be a turning point in the history of the Salvadoran conflict, a peak in the power of popular organizations aligned with the left, whose popularity declined after this event.

AVE BEADS: Hard to find 8 mm picasso beads in mossy greens and reds.  PATER BEADS:  flat ovals of tough, natural coral. The natural imperfections, that do not weaken these beads are powerful reminders of our humanness and that of the Archbishop, who often spoke of our imperfections.
