SERVANTS OF GOD

Fr Capodanno

Fr Kapaun
+
The Catholic Church teaches "military service is compatible with personal sanctity", citing paragraph 2310 of the Catechism which reads "Those who are sworn to serve their country in the armed forces are servants of the security and freedom of nations. If they carry out their duty honorably, they truly contribute to the common good of the nation and the maintenance of peace. Honorable military service is a 'true vocation', a 'high calling', a 'sacred duty'- all terms the Catholic Church uses to describe honorable military service.

GOSPEL of ST JOHN 15:13
13  No one has greater love than this,  to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

MARTYRDOM
BY THE DESIGN OF GOD
+
THOMAS OF CANTERBURY, /ARCHBISHOP / MARTYR
SLAIN IN HIS OWN CATHEDRAL FOR DENYING THE KING
"A martyr, a saint, is always made by the design of God, for His love of men, to warn them and to lead them, to bring them back to His ways. A martyrdom is never the design of man; for the true martyr is he who has become the instrument of God, who has lost his will in the will of God, not lost it but found it, for he has found freedom in submission to God. The martyr no longer desires anything for himself, not even the glory of martyrdom.
+
So thus as on earth the Church mourns and rejoices at once, in a fashion that the world cannot understand; so in Heaven the Saints are most high, having made themselves most low, seeing themselves not as we see them, but in the light of the Godhead from which they draw their being." Thomas A Becket,  29 December 1170

ENTERED OFFICERS CANDIDATE SCHOOL
On completion in 1966,  he reported to the 7th Marines, in Vietnam'   On completion of his tour, he requested an extension and reported to the 5th Marines. There, he gained a reputation for always being there--for always taking care of his Marines. And over time became affectionately known by his men as the 'Grunt Priest'.

By 9:14 am, 26 Marines were confirmed dead.

GIVING AID
 WHEN KILLED IN BATTLE
Father Capodonno requested to be moved into the area to take care of the wounded. He shielded a fallen Corpsman from nearby enemy fire and was riddled with 27 Viet Cong bullets. He died wearing his pastoral stole, serving his men by administering Last Rites and providing medical aid, inspiring courage to the wounded.

AVE BEADS: Another rare find, these reminding us of Father Capodanno. Each 'pebble' beads is rugged on the surface. Note the facets cut into each surface revealing an inner clarity.  When held up to natural light, there is a sense of - an inner light, that of of God's presence - as in the priest. PATER BEADS: Fine Bodhi wooden beads ( from Pacific Rim) capped with filigree metals. Note the blood red facets on either side to represent the spilling of his life blood while ministering to others on the filed.

PRISONER OF WAR
Taken prisoner by Chinese soldiers during the Battle of Unsan near Unsan, North Korea(November 2, 1950.)[ Along with Mass, He dug latrines, mediated disputes, gave away his own food, and raised morale among prisoners.  He was noted among his fellow POWs as one who would steal coffee and tea (and a pot to heat them in) from the Communist guards.
+
He developed a blood clot in his leg along with dysentery and pneumonia. Weakened he was taken to a "hospital", which was really a place where he was left alone without any help and left to die ... of malnutrition on May 23, 1951. He was buried in a mass grave near the Yalu River.

REVELATION 6: 9-11

When he broke open the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been slaughtered because of the witness they bore to the word of God.   10  They cried out in a loud voice, “How long will it be, holy and true master, before you sit in judgment and avenge our blood on the inhabitants of the earth?” 11  Each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to be patient a little while longer until the number was filled of their fellow servants and brothers who were going to be killed as they had been.

~ "IF WE FAIL TO FORGIVE" ~
  "SPEND MYSELF FOR GOD"
To his Bishop, Father Emil said: "When I was ordained, I was determined to‘spend myself ’ for God. I was determined to do that cheerfully, no matter in what circumstances I would be placed or how hard a life I would be asked to lead. .... ", "If we fail to forgive, we're rejecting our faith"

PATER BEADS: Antiqued metal filigree Paters with 3 ribbed beads on either side reminded us of the enemy prison where he died in captivity.
