~ WHAT IS LIMBO? ~ |
Yeserday I was confused about something and said, "I feel like I am in Limbo somebody help me out !". Ooops, what -does- 'Limbo" mean so I looked it up: + CHILDRENS LIMBO "LIMBO (border / edge) Middle Ages, A word still feared by many yet never really defined by Church Dogma. Rumor has it is a place where unbaptized babies go - a dead end of sorts. "the edge of hell", deprived of the joy of eternal exixtance with God in heaven." I didnt like that, so I asked Father Joe. + Whatever name may be used for limbo to designate the abode of the departed just, the implication generally is:
LIMBO IS NOW CLOSED
AS "TODAY YOU WILL BE WITH ME" The Kingdom began when the Lord Jesus Christ was born to the Virgin Mary, the door to Kingdom opened when the Lord Jesus Christ died on the cross to save sinners, and the eternal Kingdom will be established on earth and heaven when the Lord Jesus returns at the Parousia the Second coming. The “Good Thief” who repented of his sin demonstrates that Limbo is now closed Jesus said: “Today you will be with me in Paradise.” + Let me know if this helps to get you out of Limbo. Fr Joe (and yes, Fr Joe, I am now out of limbo! Locked the mental door on the way out!) + Father Joe's extended historical review below is worthy of your read: |
HISTORICAL REVIEW OF LIMBO Here are my notes on Limbo with Latin translated this is a Jewish/ Catholic slant. And after reading this you will understand why I NEVER would do this to a grieving mother who has lost a child. + GENERALLY BELIEVED Jewish and Catholic Limbos: limbus patrum (Limbo of the Fathers) limbus infantum,”Infant’s Limbo” or limbus puerorum (“Children’s Limbo”) The consistent
belief in the limbus patrum (Limbo of the Fathers) of Christian tradition
was universal among the Jews, in the Old Testament and New Testament periods.
The limbus infantum,”Infant’s Limbo” or limbus puerorum (“children’s limbo”),
which is the abode of those who have died without actual sin but whose
original sin has not been washed away by baptism. This “children’s limbo”
included not only dead unbaptized infants but also the mentally impaired.
The question of the destiny of infants dying unbaptized presented itself to Christian theologians at a relatively early period. Generally speaking, it may be said that the Greek Fathers of the Church inclined to a cheerful view and the Latin Fathers to a gloomy view. + Now it may confidently be said that the Greek Father’s cheerful view was correct, as the result of centuries of speculation on the subject, we ought to believe that these souls enjoy and will eternally enjoy a state of perfect natural happiness; and this is what Catholics usually mean when they speak of the limbus infantium, the "children's limbo." + UNDULY RESTRICTIVE VIEW OF SALVATION The concept of limbo plays no role in contemporary Catholic theological thinking. In 2004 the International Theological Commission, an advisory body to the Vatican, under the direction of Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (the future Pope Benedict XVI) began examining the question of limbo. In 2007 the commission, with the approval of Benedict, declared that the traditional view of limbo offered an “unduly restrictive view of salvation” and that there was hope that infants who died without being baptized would be saved. + As a chaplain I never talk about Limbo because it is speculative theology and the Catholic teaching here is not congruent. The Lord Jesus Christ gave us the sacrament of Baptism but he said: + LUKE 1:50 (NCV)
I LOVED THIS: Scripture from the Old Testaments present God’s MERCY being able to save children and infants before they are accountable for their sin – children and infants experience instant heaven when they die.

+ A HORRIFIC PRACTICE YET SACRIFICED CHILDREN 'INNOCENT' In the days of the prophet Jeremiah, those who followed false gods in Israel were guilty of offering their child as burnt sacrifices. God spoke His judgement on Jew and Gentile who followed this horrific practice, at the same time calling the sacrificed children “innocent”. We read in Jeremiah 19:4-7 + JEREMIAH 19:4-7 (NAB)
THEY ARE INNOCENT, NOT GUILTY God almighty says these children in death are innocent and not guilty. God does not use the word “innocent” unless He means it. The parents were guilty of worshipping false gods but the children were innocent. Even when dealing with unbelieving pagan parents that have lost a child. I can give them hope for the miscarried, still born and babies that die after birth. The child of pagans are safe in the arms of God. God is just and not punish the innocent. + Let me know if this helps to get you out of Limbo. Fr Joe
