RARE RAINBOW CALSILICA AND BROWN SEEDS
  WHAT IS RAINBOW CALSILICA? (Calsite and Silica) This is a new 'mystery material' (2002) on the market about which little is known. But what we do know is that it is a magnificent collection of layered colors and is very popular with jewelry designers who don't seem to give its origin much concern. (Especially favored by SouthWestern Artists) Our vender did not know much about it. She said to the best of her knowledge it was a by product of the mining industry, a type of 'run off' or 'sludge' which is being stabilized then milled into beads.

In our research we also discovered that it is coming from Mexican mines where it is being cut into slabs.  It is then shipped to the US where it is stabilized, cut and and polished for use in jewelry and other art forms and in spite of its 'mystery' it does not seem to affect its beauty or popularity.
 
 ... SEVERAL THEORIES ...
Theories range from it being a natural 'sludge' from the mining process - to the layering of artists or man made pigments.  It is generally believed to be the result of the runoff of mining or oil drilling chemicals forming a layered multi-colored slab that has hardened over the last 30 to 50 years.  Studies from a laboratory in Arizona described Rainbow Calsilica as a “microcrystalline calcite with the color resulting from a copper push that cross-cuts rhyolite.” The question remains, 'Does it occur naturally or is it manufactured?'  Because if its rare beauty, 'does it make any difference?'
