Maximilian Kolbe (1894-1941) was born in Russian Occupied Poland (Pabiance). He was baptized Raymond. In 1906, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to him. He was about to receive his first holy communion. She offered him the graces of virginity and martyrdom and asked him which one he wanted. He begged for both. He joined the Order of Friars Minor Conventual in Austrian Occupied Poland, and took the name Maximilian. He received his doctorates in Philosophy and Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, which was run by the Jesuits. In 1917, he founded the Militia of the Immaculate and published a monthly newsletter whose circulation grew from 5,000 to over 500,000 in a very short time. + CRYSTAL PATERS FACETED BEADS WITH SIVER VITRAIL AND CAPPED WITH HAND CAST CAPS + 'I WANT TO DIE FOR THIS MAN' When the Nazis took over, they allowed him one last publication in Dec of 1940. In February of '41, he was arrested and sent to prison camp and later transferred to Auschwitz-Birkenau (Poland), the Nazi's largest and most horrible death camp. On July 31, 1941, a prisoner escaped from Auschwitz. Ten men were selected to die because of it. Francis Gatchenzdic was one of them. He cried out in anguish, "My poor wife and children". Maximillian Kolbe, stepped forward and said, "I am a Catholic priest. I have no family. I want to die for this man". The Nazis accepted the transfer and Maximilian Kolbe, prisoner #16670, after three weeks of starvation and dehydration, died by a lethal carbonic acid injection on August 14 and became a martyr. + This rosary, by chance, was dedicated on his feast day, August 14, 2001 ROSARY

No one in the world can change Truth. What we can do and should do is to seek truth and to serve it when we have found it. The real conflict is the inner conflict. Beyond armies of occupation and the hecatombs of extermination camps, there are two irreconcilable enemies in the depth of every soul: good and evil, sin and love. And what use are the victories on the battlefield if we ourselves are defeated in our innermost personal selves? + Saint Maximilian Kolbe + |
