When the Nazis took over, they allowed him one last
publication in Dec of 1940. In February of 41, he was arrested and sent
to prison camp and later transferred to Auschwitz-Birkenau (Poland), the
Nazi's largest and most horrible death camp. On July 31, 1941, a prisoner
escaped from Auschwitz. Ten men were selected to die because of it.
Francis Gatchenzdic was one of them. He cried out in anguish, "My poor
wife and children". Maximillian Kolbe, stepped forward and said,
"I am a Catholic priest. I have no family. I want to die for this man".
The Nazis accepted the transfer and Maximilian Kolbe, prisoner #16670,
after three weeks of starvation and dehydration died by a lethal carbonic
acid injection on August 14 and became a martyr.
