FILIGREE ROSARIES
INSPIRED BY ANTIQUE
FILIGREE ROSARY FROM THE 17 - 18 C
Inspired by
the exquisite filigree rosaries from the middle 1600s on . When filigree,
a very lacy metal openwork was first discovered by the jewelers and rosary
makers in upper Bavaria and Austria, it became the basis for a new rosary
called the Filigree Rosary. Beads and eventually reliquary crosses and
medallions were designed using this technique. Embedded in the surface
of these crosses were hand painted porcelain symbols including the crucified
Christ and the Eucharist (cup and host). Some have wood set in the cross
(sometimes mother of pearl was inserted into the wood.) Some were medallions
instead of crosses and it was not unusual for these fat, lacy frames to
carry metal 'coin like' images of Popes, kings and popular saints. Filigree
rosaries in silver and gold with coral beads and other precious stones
quickly became very popular in Europe and were coveted, especially by royalty
and the wealthy. We have reproduced some of the favorites below:

Prefer an old one? Antique Filigrees are still available
and come up now and then on Ebay. Just make sure the seller is able to
date correctly as is very hard to tell the old from the new from age to
age from images. While in Germany, we also saw new ones from the Bavarian
Forest in Oberammergau (2007) at GG. LANG SEL. ERBEN (Tel 008 22/1081,
Fax 008 22 / 1060)

WHAT IS A CREDOKREUZ?
A CREDO (Creed) KREUZ (cross) is the little cross
that sits above the large pendant cross or medallion on rosaries of the
period. Once the Creed was repeated, a traditional prayer was said on this
cross. The prayer asked for an 'increase of faith hope and love or charity.'
(Early rosaries of this period did not carry the 3 Ave beads in the pendant
but were added later.) Today, the Creed is said on the large crucifix at
the bottom of the pendant and in our area, the prayer for an 'increase
of faith, hope and love' still follows the Creed.

12 At present we see indistinctly, as in a mirror,
but then face to face. At present I know partially; then I shall know fully,
as I am fully known. 13 So faith, hope,
love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love

(You may order the filigree with or without this
cross, in sterling or bronze. We prefer the all silver without the credo
but that is a matter of choice. Note that the filigree is much shorter
than most rosaries.)

CONTEMPORARY
FILIGREES
The filigrees
are still being made but very hard to find. (Oberammergau - from Bavarian
Forest) We had seen them in Augsburg a few years ago and the lady shopkeeper
told us that the family had been making them for several hundred years.
At that time, they had new ones hanging on the wall. A recent email from
Robert Vester-Bendtsen (DK) gave us the thought of just ordering them from
this company instead of making a similar one here.
+
(We had the
supplies sitting on the table so when he wrote, we realized it was
one of those 'God Moments'.) I gave him the small amount of info
I had re the shop and he was able to find it through the chamber of commerce.
We emailed, and thank Irmgard Mailer (Devot. A. Anzmann, GmbH Maximlianstr.
50, 86150 Augsburg (DE) who told us that the filigree supplies were
no longer available so were unable to make them any more. That was all
we needed to continue a dedication filigree rosary using similar products.
The beads we chose below are typical of the beads used in filigrees. We
hope you are as excited as we are about our 'new' dedication filigree rosaries:
