HOW DID THEY KNOW
IT WAS THE TRUE CROSS?
The area where the relics were buried became a holy place of pilgrimage for the new Christians in Jerusalem.  To discourage them, a temple was built over it to a pagan god which ended up as simply marking the holy spot.The Jews (New Christians) kept this information to themselves, passing it from generation to generation verbatim.  When the spot was pointed out to Helen in the 4th Century, the temple was torn down. They dug into the gravel and rocky soil, finding the remains of all three crosses.  The instruments of death were discarded all together according to the traditions of the day.
