This devotion has its roots in the Servants of Mary or the Servite Order. The Servites have a long history beginning in Monte Senario Italy (1233) on the feast of the Assumption. 7 professional men from Florence,( an important commercial center of Europe) were influenced by the penitential spirit common to the Brothers of Penance with whom they were in close contact. It is believed that Mary came to them and requested that they devote themselves to her service, thus was their beginning. + By 1240 they withdrew from the world to pray and serve the Lord, leading a life of penance, prayer and service to 'St Mary'. Because of so many visitors, they retreated again to Monte Senario nearby where Mary again visited the men. Here the Servites were formed. By 1244 under the direction of St Peter of Verona OP they began to wear a religious habit similar to the Dominicans and began to live under the rule of Saint Augustine. The order took on new life and before the end of the 14c had over 100 convents throughout Europe, India and Crete. The Servites devoted their prayer to the rosary as requested by Our Lady. + 7 SETS OF 7 BEADS Transition into the configuration of the "Servite Rosary" or "Seven Sorrows" is not clear but the 'Seven Sorrows" of Mary was born from the Psalter of Mary (150 beads) imitating the monastic Divine Office (Breviary or Liturgy of the Hours), during the course of which the monks daily prayed the 150 Psalms. + We have carefully chosen beads to symbolize very special events in the lives of Mary and Jesus. We hope these little symbols will enrich your prayer. Please read about them as captions on the images below. Finding the medal of the seven sorrows was a great blessing for us as we had been looking for a larger one that could be used on chaplets. The reverse side of this beautiful medal is that of the Holy Face. The Rosary Workshop has designed 5 chaplets of the 7 Sorrows of the the Virgin with hopes one will find its way into your hands for prayer. + Also available as 5 decade rosary on the cart. |

A magnificent medal (1.25 in.) of the seven sorrows is set here with antique (Germany 1930- 60s) matte glass beads (8 mm x 10 mm) that carry the traditional oval shaped Ave beads we see in old rosaries. Black symbolizes strength and sadness. the Pater beads are of precious wood and remind us of the cross, each capped with an antiqued filigree. |

Mary is often thought of as 'AN EMPTY TABLET ON WHICH IS WRITTEN THE WORD OF GOD.' She is a perfect model for all of us. Thus these flat glass beads (old 'table cuts' or '2 window' beads) remind us of a tablet. Crystal clear with inclusions of red to symbolize the passion of Christ. Part of the sorrows of Mary. Center is of the Eucharistic theme surrounded by two angels. |

"I ordered two Servite...Seven Sorrows Rosaries on Tuesday. The shipment arrived yesterday [thursday]. Upon opening this treasure I was so excited I presented this gift to my girl friend today ... Her birthday is not until September 26. The reason I ordered two is that my birthday gift to [her] is that I commited to reciting the Seven Sorrows Rosary once a week. I hoped that she would do the same. She is making the same commitment." Bob Audley (Redemptorist Catholic Church, Kansas City, MO) + ... gave one to each of them to pray for each other ... My granddaughter recently became a state title holder in the Miss American Pageant (scholarship program) and just before this she met a young man who is an asst coach at one of the major universities in the US. They will both be carrying on a very busy schedule this year which doesn't allow for much time together. I gave them each a chaplet to carry on their world travels, with the thought of praying for God's will in the other - and - in their lives this next year and the future. They assured me they ARE!
