ABOVE: The Ave's appear to be silver filigree as do the larger Pater beads. There are 5 decades and 6 Paters (may or may not be the original configuration of this rosary.) Note the two Pater beads above the filigree cross and medal. The center is large which inspires us today to use the larger medals at the beginning of the pendant. the filigree tubular cross reminds us of others we have seen from the 1800s. + Also missing 3 beads in the decade to the right, were probably lost in time as compared to a prayer response for a special intention. |

ABOVE: An 'all in one loop' rosary, note the 3 Ave beads are not on a pendant but enclosed in the loop itself. Also note the smaller Pater beads and the credo cross above the bottom cross. + EAGLEWOOD AVE BEADS Description enclosed with pictures: "This rosary is composed of turned beads made of aromatic wood set in filigree silver and linked by chains in S form. The Ave Marias are in eagle-wood and alternate with the Pater Nosters, which are in gold and formed of two calottes connected bt a band. The coiled silver thread which makes the form the same provenance as the beads. + There is abundant documentation of bead rosarie from the Orient, some of which were made in precious or exotic materials such as amber, coral, rock, crystal or aromatic wood." + "Those in the Museu de Arte Antiga fall within this category, as do those left Father André Coutinho to D. Miguel da Gama to Admiral Count D. Francisco da Gama, his executors: "some eaglewood beads and there are fifty of them in my black desk", and "my amber beads decorated with gold".
With special thanks to those who sent this to us for study. |
