Purchased in Rothenberg Germany at an old Antique shop in the walled city in 1996. This is a wonderful example of the larger filigrees that has been chained instead of strung. Most filigree rosaries we have seen have been much smaller in size. Note the small medallion at the end of the pendant instead of a cross or crucifix. CONFIGURATION
- BEADS - CREDO
CROSS - RELIQUARY

~ BEADS ~ Faceted with irregular 'English Cuts' - glass, not garnet. Early filigree Paters were filled with sachet or pomander so the aroma of prayers - like incense - would reach the heavenlies. Beads are 9mm. |

Glass beads were made to imitate semi precious stones and were called 'English Cuts'. The facets are very uneven. Softened glass pressed into molds to look as if they had been hand cut and polished. Although very primitive, they had a quality and charm of their own. |
|
~ CREDO CROSS ~ Filigree Rosaries have a small 'Credo' Cross (Creed) before the large Filigree medallion or Crucifix at the end of the Pendant. Once the Creed has been recited or prayed, one is reminded to ask for 'an increase of faith, hope and love'.
When the 3 Ave beads were added to the pendant, one was for faith, one for hope and one for Love. Today, to ask for an increase in faith, hope and love all at once, is the standard prayer. |
|
~ RELIQUARY BOX ~ This small filigreed reliquary box carries the image of Mary holding the baby Jesus on one side and the other, possibly the kings image of the times. Lettering is difficult to read. - 1.5 in |
