~ LIFE of PHILOMENA ~
Little is known about this young girl other that
what has been revealed when her tomb was discovered in the Catacomb of
St Priscilia (Rome) in 1802. The bones of a female between the ages of
13 and 15 were discovered and an inscription near her tomb read
+
PAXTE CUM FI LUMENA
(Pax tecum Filumena!)
PEACE BE TO YOU PHILOMENA!
+
Drawings of 2 anchors, 3 arrows and a palm
and a small vial were found in the tomb. The vial contained remains
of blood. Because leaving symbols or signs of this kind was a popular
custom during this time of persecution, they were able to read that she
was a virgin and martyr. The name Philomena contains the words: filia
luminis, daughter of light. Shortly after this discovery, there were hundreds
of miraculous healings and her popularity became widespread.
+
People such as St. John Vianney, St.
Madeleine Sophie Barat - founder of the Society of the Sacred Heart,
St. Peter Eymard - Founder of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament,
and
St. Peter Chanel - Marist Priest and Martyr, became
her devotees. After being miraculously cured, Ven. Pauline Jaricot - foundress
of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith and the Living Rosary,
insisted
that Pope Gregory XVI begin an examination for the beatification of St.
Philomena which happened a mere 35 years later in 1837. The Holy
Father called her the 'Wonder Worker of the 19c'. She would be named
the 'Patroness of the Living Rosary' and the 'Patroness of the Children
of Mary'. Philomena is the only person recognized as 'a saint solely on
the basis of her powerful intercession'
+
THE TRADITION OF PHILOMENA
The tradition of Philomena remains a mystery. It is not known
when she was born but is documented that she died in 304ad. The story
of her martyrdom is this: When she was 13, her father, an important
ruler of the time, was called to Rome where he met with Dioclesian the
Emperor to discuss the occasion of an unjust war. He brought his
wife and daughter. When Dioclesian saw his daughter, Philomena, he offered
a trade for her hand in marriage by placing at her father's disposal all
the force of the empire. When she refused, it threw the Emperor into
a rage. He had her cast into one of the prisons where she was chained.
The Blessed Mother visited her with encouragement for what was to come
and left her prison filled with a celestial perfume.
+
Soon, Dioclesian had her publicly tortured. Her clothes
were removed and she was beaten until clothed in her own blood. She was
again imprisoned. Instead of dying, she was given a healing balm
by two angels. The Emperor had an anchor tied around her neck and she was
thrown into the Tiber. Two angels cut the rope and the anchor fell to the
bottom of the river where it remains today, and she was saved. Many who
had become spectators along the river were converted.
+
In his anger, the Emperor had her dragged through the streets
of Rome and then ordered she be shot with a shower of arrows. She was taken
back to her dungeon and after a heavenly sleep, awoke cured. They tried
again but the arrows refused to obey. Then the Emperor had the arrows
made red hot in a furnace and tried again but this time the arrows turned
in their course and came back on the archers and many were killed while
others renounced paganism. The Emperor ended the earthly life of
Philomena by having her head cut off and she entered heaven with the crown
of virginity and the palm of martyrdom. It is said she died at 3 pm on
a Friday, which was the same hour of the death of our Lord.
+
This information was made public after 3 private revelations.
None of the people knew about the others but their testaments agreed .
The Holy See did not guarantee its authenticity but the Holy Office gave
its sanction for dissemination on December 21, 1883.

FOOTNOTE:
Emperor Dioclesian, who severely persecuted and killed Christians
during his reign, would 'retire' the next year in 305. He would be
replaced by Constantine the Great (306 - 337) who became the first Christian
Emperor. In 312, Maxentius, the interim Emperor went to war against Constantine.
Constantine prayed for a sign and a fiery Chi-Rho, a symbol of Jesus Christ
appeared over the sun with the legend - 'toúto níka'
(conquer with this). He had been advised by Christ, in a dream the
previous night, to go into battle armed with this sign, so he placed the
symbol on his standards and shields before going into battle.
+
History tells us he won the decisive victory and Emperor Maxentius
was thrown from the Milvian Bridge into the Tiber River where he drowned.
Constantine issued the Edict of Milan in 313 which gave absolute freedom
of religion in the Roman Empire which was the driving force for the Christianization
of Europe.
St Philomena's relics are now preserved in Mugnano, Italy.
