rosary workshop - prayer-novena
WHAT is a NOVENA?
 WHERE DOES IT COME FROM?
A Novena  (novem, nine) is nine days of private or public devotion to obtain special graces.  According to New Advent, 'The number nine in Holy Writ is indicative of suffering and grief'.  But it is also faithfully used by people who are searching for answers, healing and personal needs.

  PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

Its history is scriptural.  The first novena was prayed by the 120 disciples including Mary after the Ascension of Jesus which is celebrated on Holy Thursday.  9 days of intense prayer after the Ascension of Jesus into Heaven until the Day of Pentecost is recorded in Acts. The heavenly response to this first novena was the Holy Spirit who came on each one present as tongues of fire.  All were given the gifts of the Spirit.

PENTECOST - A JEWISH FEAST DAY
This day of Pentecost, the second most important feast in Jewish tradition - also called The Feast of Harvest of the Firstfruits" (Exodus 23:16), "The Feast of Weeks" (Exodus 24:22; Deuteronomy 16:10: II  Paralipomenon 8:13), the "Day of Firstfruits" (Numbers 28:26),  became the birthday of the New Christian Church.

To understand how the Jewish celebration includes the wheat/bread, the sacrificial lamb and "the day of the giving of the Law" read New Advent Pentecost (The Jewish Feast)

~ PRAYER to the HOLY SPIRIT ~

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your Faithful. Enkindle in us the fire of Your Love.
Send forth Your Spirit, and we shall be created.  And You will renew the Face of the Earth.

  Let us pray:
O God Who instructs the hearts of the Faithful by the Light of the Holy Spirit, grant us in that same Spirit to be truly wise and ever to rejoice in His consolation -- through Christ, Our Lord. Amen.
