This devotion which brings to mind the 7 sorrows of Mary (see below) has a long history beginning with the Servites (Servants of Mary) in Monte Senario Italy about the time the order was started (1233) on the feast of the Assumption.. These 7 professional men from Florence,( an important commercial center of Europe) were influenced by the penitential spirit common to the Brothers of Penance with whom they were in close contact. These Ave Beads are surrounded by faceted blue Austrian crystal (Swarovski). Each capped with an antiqued medal handcast leaf. Rosebuds are individually hand pressed glass (1940 - 50). Center is of Mary's heart pierced with the Seven Swords, symbolizing her suffering. |

Mary is often thought of as "AN EMPTY TABLET ON WHICH IS WRITTEN THE WORD OF GOD." A perfect model for all of us. If the stripes on these tablets could talk, if they were a record of some kind, they might tell us of her heart when she heard the words of Simeon who was waiting for the consolation of Israel. |

Old German glass bead makers formed these 9 mm rosebuds one at a time many years ago. They hold a secret only to be revealed when held up to the light! Paters are of antique capped filigree Swarovski beads from Austria - a glorious find for anyone who wants to know they are holding a rosary! Medal is of the Seven Sorrows of Mary, reverse, the Holy face of Jesus. Center is of the Eucharist. |

~ ABOUT THE SERVITES ~ |

... In 1240 they withdrew from the world to pray and serve the Lord, leading a life of penance, prayer and service to 'St Mary'. Because of so many visitors, they retreated again to Monte Senario nearby where Mary again visited the men. Here the Servites were formed. By 1244 under the direction of St Peter of Verona OP they began to wear a religious habit similar to the Dominicans and began to live under the rule of Saint Augustine. The order took on new life and before the end of the 14c had over 100 convents throughout Europe, India and Crete. The Servites devoted their prayer to the rosary of the Seven Sorrows. + The chaplet of the 7 Sorrows of Mary is a collection of 7 sets of 7 beads. We have carefully chosen beads to symbolize very special evemts in the lives of Mary and Jesus. We hope these little symbols will enrich your prayer. Please read about them as captions on the images below.Finding the medal of the seven sorrows was a great blessing for us as we had been looking for one that could be used on one of our chaplets that by nature are larger than most. The reverse side of this beautiful medal is that of the Holy Face.
